At Home Insemination, Our Journey

We started our journey back in April of 2018. The two of us wanted to do this with a known donor. Lucky for us, we knew someone that would gladly help us. So, we hit the ground running… resulting in us not knowing very much beforehand. When we decided this was the route we wanted to go it was to avoid using a doctor for as long as we can, mainly because of our experience our first month of trying. When my fiance went to a doctor we decided to get a pregnancy test while we were there and the doctor was less than friendly. After that we decided to cut out doctors, almost, entirely until we get a positive pregnancy test. That was our decision as a couple, and we continue to be very happy with our decision, even without a baby yet. So, this is what we’ve learned since then, what we’ve improved upon and just any information we’ve gained along the way.

At Home Insemination;

We continue to use a setup very similar to the one I included a photo of. Including a specimen cup that is sterilized before use, a syringe that’s still in the package, cheap ovulation tests (we have been getting ours at a local Dollar Tree).

Our donor will simply make a donation within our household and then we use the donation as soon as it is received. And before any questions are asked or assumptions are assumed, the donor has been tested and we know his sexual background as well as his current health status before every attempt.

We have kept this as professional as we can, but it isn’t too strict that it’s awkward. Which is something I ENTIRELY recommend. We are close with this person, but do not see them that often. So build a good relationship with this person if this is a route you plan to go as well.

Now, this is where it’ll get a little TMI, so be prepared.

Our donor is in a relationship, in which his partner is already pregnant, yay! Now, not only is this a “yay!” because all babies are a beauty to be celebrated, but it is a good sign that our donor is, in fact, fertile. They’ve been pregnant for a few months now, so during our trying they conceived as well.

Now, him having sex during us trying is a good thing, there’s no point in denying it mainly because it relieves stress on weeks when we are not trying to conceive ourselves. The less stressed the donor is the better, kind of a no brainer. However, he refrains from doing too much during a month because it can lessen the amount we receive as a donation. So, we are in a nice middle ground and it works, fairly well. We receive a decent size donation each day we try.

Now, we inseminate around my fiances ovulation day, after all these months we’ve tracked, we have a pretty good idea on when this day is each month. We attempt 2 days prior to predicted ovulation, on ovulation, and a day after as well. That’s 4 times a month EVERY month. Now on the ovulation tests we used the first few months it told us when she ovulated the day before, now we just keep it tracked on the FLO app.

These four days we have it set that every night we receive the donation about a week in advanced, it gives our donor a bit of a heads up. We position her pelvic upright a few minutes after he enters our bathroom. Using firm pillows we stack and position her bum directly in the center and the rest of her body falls onto the bed. We drape a blanket over her legs and wait with the door semi cracked. After he’s done his business he puts the cap on the cup and passes it through the crack. Then the real fun begins.

We use the syringe and suck up as much of the donation as we can and we distribute it inside my fiance. Afterwards she sits up in the previously described position for 30 minutes to and hour. Now, yes, we know, this sounds a little moronic. Other articles and blogs I’ve read says it only takes 5 minutes, and you’re free to move, but we wait just to be sure.

For the next few days my fiance avoids taking baths, strictly showers, which is dreadful for her, she loves a relaxing bath. She, also, avoids overly stressful situations and just takes this time to relax. Avoiding caffeine, access sugar, and drinks waters and teas. Highly recommend that as well! Drink,drink, drink up! Also, try and eat a good amount each day, but don’t forget getting out and up and moving around is good for you too. This is our monthly goals each time. Another habit to get into is taking some sort of Prenatal Vitamin. The folic is just as good for pre-pregnancy as it is for pregnancy.

Now, we’ve been doing this for, almost, 9 months already. That’s with some botched attempts that we assumed wouldn’t work before we even began waiting for a period. However, we continue to keep trying, because we know our odds are weakened, but we stay positive and hopeful that we’ll get our own blessing soon. We will be sharing so much more, including; the struggles, our feelings, and just overall how we are doing.
